Thanks to funding from the European Marine Fisheries Fund, and with support from the Sustainable Eel Group (SEG), we have been working with Somerset Wildlife Trust to ensure that eels can continue to find safe refuge in our the county’s wetland habitats during their epic journey.
Our Fisheries Scientist & Dorset & Somerset Fisheries Team Leader Scott West said: “The European eel is a critically endangered fish species. The project has enabled us to monitor the eels to understand their populations, but we want to continue in future, including through citizen science opportunities.”
