The LOCATE project will be looking at quantifying the carbon fluxes from soil (primarily peat) as well as to look in detail at the processes that govern the fate of the soil as it is transported from land to river to estuary to sea (i.e. potential loss through bacteria or photolysis). The “unlocking” of carbon from soils contributes to climate change, so it is important to be able to model such processes so that future effects on the climate can be predicted with some certainty.
LOCATE will aim to build a new model based on the many samples they will take from UK rivers and estuaries.
