Our new mobile inflatable engagement tool – or as most will know it, a bouncy castle! – is set to make its debut at community events this summer.

As part of our Rapid Response Catchments Project, this engagement tool is designed to raise awareness about natural flood management and the role we all play in building flood resilience. The inflatable uses vibrant visuals and storytelling to show how slowing the flow of water through our landscapes can reduce flood risk and protect our communities.

Historically, engagement around flood management has relied on traditional channels such as parish councils, community groups, and specialist workshops. While effective for certain audiences, these approaches often fail to reach younger families and other underrepresented groups who are vital to long-term community resilience.

This new tool is designed to address that gap. By attending established public events such as local fairs, school fetes, and festivals, the inflatable offers a free, accessible, and family-friendly experience. It captures attention, encourages dwell time, and opens up opportunities for informal conversations about the challenges facing our regions rivers.

The bouncy castle format appeals especially to children, which naturally draws in parents and carers, creating a space for engagement that is both playful and informative. It complements existing engagement tools already in use by the project, many of which have proven successful in hands-on learning environments.

As the inflatable makes its way across our region this summer, it promises to be more than just a fun attraction. It’s a new way of connecting with the public, breaking down barriers to engagement, and fostering greater understanding of the steps we can take together to manage our catchments more sustainably.
