At the Westcountry Rivers Trust (WRT), our Land Team plays a vital role in protecting and improving the health of the South West’s rivers by supporting farmers and landowners to manage their land more sustainably. By offering tailored, expert advice and practical solutions, we aim to reduce pollution from agricultural land, enhance biodiversity, and boost the resilience and productivity of rural landscapes.

A Win-Win Approach to Land Management

Drawing on extensive expertise in farming, water management, and natural capital, our advisors work directly with landowners to deliver a wide range of services. These include confidential on-farm advice, soil testing, infrastructure improvement recommendations, pesticide collection schemes, and support for environmental funding applications. Through this work, we promote nature-based solutions and practices that improve soil health, reduce runoff, and enhance on-farm efficiency.

The goal is simple: to ensure the water that leaves the land is as clean as possible before it reaches the streams and rivers of the Westcountry.

The day to day in the Land Team.

Our advisors might begin their day preparing for a farm visit, reviewing maps and identifying high-risk areas for water pollution. They’ll then spend time on-site with a farmer, walking the land, discussing goals, and offering practical advice. After the visit, they’ll produce a report, outline funding opportunities, and plan follow-up support. Natural capital advisors may focus more on habitat connectivity, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, ensuring our landscape-scale ambitions are met.

Flagship Project: Upstream Thinking

Funded by South West Water and delivered in partnership with Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, FWAG SW and South West Lakes Trust, our Upstream Thinking programme is a cornerstone of our work. Now entering its fourth phase, the project covers seven key drinking water catchments: the Dart, Exe, Fowey, Otter, Roadford, Tamar, and Tavy.

What’s Been Achieved?

  • Better Farm Practices: Farmers have been supported in adopting land management practices that reduce negative impacts on water sources.
  • Habitat Restoration: Semi-natural habitats have been maintained, restored, created, and connected to support biodiversity and improve water retention.
  • Nature-Based Solutions: Demonstration projects have showcased practical ways to tackle water quality and retention issues.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: Farmyard and in-field infrastructure have been improved or built to reduce water pollution risks.

Here is a summary of what was delivered during the 3rd phase of the project (2020-2025)

Driving Lasting Change

Every farm and field presents a new opportunity to make a difference. By working collaboratively with farmers and partners, our Land Team is helping to tackle the thousands of small, diffuse pollution incidents that cumulatively degrade our rivers. With every grant awarded, tree planted, and practice improved, we move closer to our vision: a thriving Westcountry where people, farms, and nature flourish together.
