An exhibition of artworks at a famous Devon hotel will raise money for the Westcountry Rivers Trust this May.

From Thursday 3rd May, a selection of acclaimed sporting artists from around the UK will showcase their country pursuit inspired pieces, local Devon landscapes and stunning photography at the Arundell Arms Hotel in Lifton, Devon.

Managed by Trustee of the Westcountry Rivers Trust Adam Fox-Edwards, the Arundell Arms Hotel is known as one of the best sporting hotels in the country.  Situated in the Dartmoor village of Lifton, the Arundell Arms is renowned for its access to 21 miles of superb fishing and its warm welcome to travellers and locals. With a rich history spanning back through the generations, the hotel has a solid reputation for expertise in fishing tuition and experiences.

The inaugural Arundell Art Week celebrates the countryside and all that residents enjoy about living in Devon, while raising funds for the Westcountry Rivers Trust and Fishing for Schools.

Confirmed artists include legendary British wildlife painter, Terence Lambert, fly-fishing legend Charles Jardine and internationally published countryside photographer, Sarah Farnsworth.

Guests will be invited to view the art and prints on offer from the 3rd May, with the opportunity to purchase their favourites and donations made to the selected charities. The hotel is offering a stay, dinner and fishing package throughout the week.

Meet the artists

Terence Lambert

Terence’s career was launched in the early seventies with several books of his paintings published by Collins. The first, ‘Lambert’s Birds of Garden and Woodland’, was published in eight languages. Past projects have taken him on expeditions across the Himalayas, Africa, and North America and to Oman where he was commissioned to produce six paintings for the Sultan of Oman.

Other major collectors include the McCartney’s and the Astor family. His work has been selected for many of the world’s most prestigious wildlife exhibitions, including The Leigh Yawkey Art Museum in Wisconsin, USA and the inaugural show for the Society of Wildlife Art for the Nation in the Guildhall London. His work has been reproduced in more than forty publications and his repertoire of medium has extended from water colour to include mixed media on paper and canvas, huge pencil drawings and a unique method of working with ink on scraper board. Terence’s Ornithological game bird sculptures, and other artwork, can now be seen within the gardens, lodges and gun rooms at Bettws Hall, Wales.

Charles Jardine

Charles has been fishing for 56 years and during that time, he has cast around the globe, collected awards, guided, painted, written, illustrated and contributed to over 20 books, including the Classic (Sotheby’s: in the UK) Guide to Fly-Fishing that was published in 5 different languages and sold over 80 thousand copies world-wide. Amongst so many achievements, Charles was humbled to be awarded Game Angler of the year by Sky Sports a couple of years ago, and silver medallist at the ESPN Outdoor Games in New York. He is director of the England Youth Fly Fishing Team and founder of Fishing for Schools.

Sarah Farnsworth

Sarah has won a multitude of awards for her photography, including being named Countryside Alliance’s 2012 Rural Hero and, more recently, winning two categories of Fieldsports Magazine’s Photographer of the Year 2017 award. She is a regular contributor to a number of national magazines including Fieldsports, The Field, Country Life, Horse and Hound and Shooting Times. Based in the Cotswolds, with 12 seasons under her belt, Sarah specialises in hunting, shooting, deer stalking, wildlife and horse racing photography.

Robin Armstrong

Widely regarded as one of the UK’s most respected wildlife artists, Robin has been painting for most of his life. In 1969, Robin moved to Dartmoor and threw himself into making a living as a full-time artist – his early exhibitions were successful with high-quality art books published in his name. Combining his love for angling with art, Robin accepted a job on the River Tay as a river warden, giving him the perfect opportunity to fuse his occupation with his wildlife painting passion. Five books came out of these years of study, including the best-selling ‘Painted Stream’, and Robin remains on Dartmoor on a quest to capture the changing world around him in his paintings.

Rachel Toll

Based in Devon, Rachel Toll specialises in watercolour paintings of landscapes, wildlife and the coats of Devon and Cornwall. Rachel strives to capture the essence of the subjects she paints. As well as prints and cards, Rachel has also been commissioned to paint a number of larger pieces, including 60 different bird paintings for the bedrooms at country house hotel, Lympstone Manor and larger landscape pieces, reproduced as wallpaper for its fine dining and reception area.
